A quick and easy weeknight dinner that makes you feel like you’re at the best hibachi spot in town
When I was growing up in my hometown, it was my family’s yearly tradition to go to our favorite Hibachi restaurant on Christmas Eve. I’d always get the steak with fried rice- this is a homemade, nourishing version of the classic. It’s PACKED with flavor from tamari/soy sauce, garlic, and toasted sesame oil.
This recipe uses leftover rice to avoid becoming mushy. Since you fry everything over a high heat burner, it cooks and comes together very quickly, making it perfect for a busy weeknight dinner. Feel free to use teriyaki chicken, shrimp, or vegetables in place of the steak. Full recipe below! Enjoy <3
Hibachi Steak
1-2lb lean cut of steak, I used a mix of filet mignon and ny strip, cubed
1 ½ tbsp toasted sesame oil
2 tbsp tamari, soy sauce, or coconut aminos
2 tbsp hoisin
5 cloves garlic, finely minced
1 tbsp ginger, freshly grated
1 tbsp butter (optional, for flavor)
Combine cubed steak with all ingredients and toss to combine. Allow to marinade for 30 minutes before cooking.
When ready to cook, place a pan over medium-high heat. Add butter and allow to melt. Add steak (in batches if needed), and allow to brown on all sides. Cook steak bites for a few minutes until medium (cut into one or two to ensure cooked through). Keep warm.
Fried Rice
3 cups cooked, day old rice (I wouldn’t recommend in using fresh rice- it will result in a mushy texture)
2 tbsp toasted sesame oil
1 small white onion, diced
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup frozen mixed veggies (corn, peas, carrots)
¼ cup tamari (more or less, to taste)
2 lightly beaten eggs
4 green onions, green parts only, chopped into small pieces (optional)
Start by heating a deep skillet over high heat. Add in one tbsp sesame oil and allow to get very hot. Add in your onion and saute until softened. Add in garlic, saute again until fragrant. Move onions and garlic to the side of skillet and add in beaten eggs, quickly scramble them.
Add in rice, remaining 1 tbsp sesame oil, and tamari. Saute for a few minutes, you want the rice to be browned and get a few caramelized bits. Add in frozen veggies (no need to thaw), and green onions. Stir to combine. Cook further until desired browning on the rice.
Serve warm with steak. Top with sesame seeds, and optionally serve with yum yum sauce or extra tamari. Enjoy!!
I hope you love this recipe!! This also makes for delicious leftovers. Have a wonderful day <3
With love,
Abigail
